i often hear negative opinions resenting the
current status of vans as a fashion brand. in fact the van doren rubber
company began as a lifestyle brand offering canvas casuals for the
entire family & only later did skaters adopt their shoes
(& not the other way round). it was fortuitous how it happened. not
through marketing or business guile but through flexible production of
affordable & design-driven footwear. what i feel is important now is
reinforcing why exactly the brand is 'cool'. that rich cultural
foundation that the brand is built upon & the family values at their
core
....that & the arsenal of core skate shoes which defined their legacy through the 70s, 80s & 90s!!
.... & lets not forget about bicylcle
motocross! if you look at any race, vert, street or freestyle event over
a 3 decade + period, not only were vans 1st in bmx.... but on the
majority of occasion 2nd, 3rd, 4th.... ad infinitum
