vintage VANS x SONIC YOUTH dirty bunnies print DGC records promo style #44 authentic MADE IN USA 1992 album art

the greatest vans homage to album art. #sonicyouth #neworder
happy easter from sonic youth, mike kelley, dirty bunnies & the other side of the pillow

produced by vans for sonic youth & a DGC records promotional contest, they feature the bunny from the album art by mike kelley for the aforementioned band's 1992 album 'dirty'. little else is know about these rarities nor how many were customade at this time. the print is obscure unless you know what you're looking at & the uppers are not super duck canvas like regular vans materials of the time but a synthetic form backed with canvas. the laces are the white rabbit at the end of the rabbithole however, with 1 featuring the band & the other featuring the album name. please excuse the fact i had never listened to sonic youth til this moment however did enjoy this video directed by spike jonze & including jason lee.

This is the rad! despite having been re-released at least 3 times this collab never fails to please, however the re-issues fall well short of the originals. having only just been re-released last year, the blue rad scene is found here on a custom tie dye slip-on from circa 1986. i remember watching rad when i was a kid & despite being overshadowed (in australia at least) by bmx bandits, it nevertheless stayed with me. watching it again over 25 years later i am still impressed. of course the john farnham soundtrack of power ballads is cringeworty & the bmx dancefloor courtship full of cheese, the bmx remains totally legit. i dont remember a film earlier than this so laden with product placement. but give the rad team credit as they don't try to make it subliminal & rather throw it in your face. from mongoose to GT, coke to vans. the vans details are amazing including the token vans display in 'miss shop' or 'rag city', the vans bmx team & of course cru jones in style #24 high tops. i understand the decision to put small town kid cru in black highs that look like converse, but i dont understand why mongoose pretty-boy bart taylor wears the same pair. would have been much more fresh seeing him in rad scene style #36 old skools or better yet these marble slip-ons!

rockville bmx was a bmx shop of legendary status operating out of rockville maryland in the 80's & 90's. reknowned for its epic factory team bmx demos, rich tradition of mail order catlogs & charismatic staff (including 1 spike jonze), rockville was 1 of many bmx outlets across america capturing the imagination of youth through the 80's boom of bmx & freestyle. from all reports however, this store was something special, just as this custom #44 is! 1st generation pre-foxing stripe authentic complete with reinforced 4-stitch back-stay, van doren heel tabs & custom rockville scene! rockville regularly held factory demos in the car park & perhaps riders like eddie fiola graced the trailer-led half pipe in vans like this?
