a very rare example of some bespoke style #19 lace-ups custom made for a friend of the van doren family. to say these are hand made is superfluous because all original vans were made by hand. the hand crafted embroidery however is 1 of a kind, as are the custom striped laces. they feature the van doren external heel tab & internal heel pads & are thought to be from the late 60's. the have been used sparingly although do show wear perhaps only from use on xmas day for the past 40+ years!

phenomenal craft by 80's avant garde designer alain mikli utilising intricate layering of coloured acetate. a single viewing does not do them justice. the layers stack like concentric circles of a tree trunk or skateboard, into the hard lines of the angular frame. pure harmony for the eyes.

vintage BRULIMAR snooker-2 upside down DENNIS TAYLOR snooker glasses 1985

 

why is this geezer wearing his frames upside-down you ask?

 

 this geezer is in fact former world snooker champion dennis taylor. his glasses were designed by former player & optician jack karnehm to counter taylor's deteriorating eyesight & inability to see the angles when looking over the top of his specs. imagine seeing the eye of the tiger coming at you through these over the top gems!

 an eccentric within the snooker community, taylor was much mocked for his 'upside-down' frames however it was this accessory which put his career back on track & facilitated his win in the 1985 world champs, which from what i understand was an incredible last frame (pun intended).

handmade frames that all superlatives fall short of. pictures don't do the detail justice. the interior surface is an acetate wood effect, while the external surface comes textured in dimpled finish complete with 7 barrel hinges & gold plated temples. frame of (gold) mined!
